Post-apocalyptic is not a new theme but The Hunger Games presents an interesting twist, with a lot of the main characters being children forced into situations they do not have the life experience to handle.
The almighty powerful Capitol and its citizens juxtapose against the struggles of the other districts, and there is a real discourse of the rich controlling the poor, explaining why every year this barbaric tournament still exists.
Katniss, the 16-year-old main character in The Hunger Games displays desirable traits and becomes someone you cannot help but cheer for in this crazy scenario. She hunts for food trying to help her poor family in District 12, before volunteering to be a tribute in the Games to take her sister's nominated spot.
This braveness is a common trait found in this character throughout the book. Her stern resolve resonates with the other characters she meets. Peeta is another contestant in the games who takes a shining to Katniss and it becomes interesting as her defensiveness is slowly disolved by his charm.
The actually Hunger Games competition itself is the best element of the story, which comes to life on page. One of the main draw-cards to The Hunger Games is just how vividly the tournament is described as the contestants battle it out. If you are squeamish be prepared for some brutal descriptions of death.
People die in The Hunger Games, and it can be draining emotionally as you read particularly because no character is not safe with the nature of the setting. If you like gore, there are some specificly good juicy moments to look forward to.
The events of the book themselves remain engrossing throughout the entire story. There are definitely a few unpredictable moments, and the book itself is very easy to read thanks to its language choices and engaging script. The Hunger Games ends on such a cliffhanger you will want to read more to see what happens next, as the story will still be left in your mind by the final chapter.
